Eagerly

Our pastor preached from Luke 22 this past Sunday, emphasizing how Jesus “eagerly” approached His time with His disciples at the Last Supper and then the accomplishment of His mission on the cross.

His sermon inspired me to write a 3^rd poem about Easter, and I wrote this one from the perspective of Jesus sharing with His followers.

My desire/hope/goal was to stay true to Scripture as the poem flowed:

“Eagerly”

That week before was special to me,
gathering for that meal,
we broke the bread and shared the cup,
which made things very real.
I eagerly wanted to share,
because you had to know,
what divine love would truly cost,
and where I had to go.

We talked of pain and suffering,
that I would now go through,
to pay the price for all the sins,
for every one of you.
For I would soon be sacrificed
and put up on that cross,
but I would then return again,
rejoicing for the lost.

I willingly approached the cross,
for joy set before me,
endured it out of obedience,
to redeem humanity.
My death was fulfillment of God’s plan,
was not a tragedy,
by conquering both sin and death,
it was a victory.

Now that you’ve seen me, checked my scars,
don’t be afraid…believe,
the One who died is now risen,
man’s pardon now achieved.
So peace be with you, use My strength,
and go where I send you,
you have received the Holy Spirit,
and with Him you’re made new.

Set out and make disciples now,
and train all those you meet,
share my light and love with them,
give them what they need.
Teach them all that I’ve taught you,
obey what I command,
and I will be with you always
until the very end.

I’ll eagerly await you there,
a home I’ve made for you,
a place of worship, rejoicing,
where all I’ve promised comes true.
You’ll join this holy celebration
when work for Me is through,
but until then, while you have breath,
you still have work to do.

I ask you to work eagerly,
just as I did for you,
and seek my will, step forth in faith,
so others find hope too.
You are My voice, My hands and feet,
since I am now back home,
My mission will live on in you,
through you I will be known.

“Eagerly” is the perfect descriptor for the posture we’re called to have as we seek the Lord, wait on Him, and work for Him.

Jesus modeled that posture for us – eagerly desiring the Last Supper; eagerly embracing the redemption accomplished through the cross; eagerly anticipating the Spirit’s arrival for His disciples; and now, eagerly awaiting the day His followers join Him in the home He has prepared for us.

May we eagerly serve Him here till He eagerly welcomes us there!
