Heart of Worship

This poem was inspired by Matt Redman’s song, “The Heart of Worship”, and by John 4:23.

Much of my life I’ve treated worship as something I did at a certain place or time, and that has been very important for me.

But worship is actually something much deeper and more relational than that:

“Heart of Worship”

I worship hard, it feels so good,
I’ve done my part, did what I should
To show the world I’m one of Yours,
My worship, though, just a detour.

I go back to the world that waits,
Where evil lures, fall for the bait,
I’m easy prey, away from You,
The worship fades, my heart’s not true.

When without You, I’m not fulfilled,
I bow in prayer, I feel a chill,
It’s only then, I feel You near,
“Be still and know” is what I hear.

I feel Your Spirit work within,
Inviting me to seek again,
You ask me to release, let go,
So I can see what You will show.

You grab my heart, I follow close,
I see Your choir of heavenly hosts,
Their songs of praise the rafters fill,
I join with them, a sacred thrill.

The worship here is glorious,
Focused on You, continuous,
It’s adoration for You, Lord,
It’s not for personal reward.

This time with You has let me see,
All that You want worship to be,
It’s not defined by time or place,
It’s celebration of Your grace.

True worship is You glorified,
Your light and love then amplified,
I want to have that heart of worship,
Always with You in fellowship.

I’m learning that worship isn’t only something we attend, but it’s an ongoing opportunity to celebrate our relationship with the Lord.

For me, what a challenge it is to have a heart of worship just some of the time, much less all the time.

But that’s God’s invitation.

That’s the goal.

So thankful He’s patient as I keep learning.
