Words

We’ve all seen how quickly our tongues can ignite fires we never intended to start.

And many times, our intense desire to react or respond is quickly followed by regret in what may have spewed in those moments.

James uses strong language in His letter (James 3:5-6) to describe the danger in an unrestrained tongue and the damage our words can do.

With so many examples of that in the world and in our lives today, it seemed like a very good time to remind myself of the impact of what I say and reflect on what I can do better:

“Words”

My tongue ignites fires that burn from my words,
With torrents of evil whenever it’s stirred,
Unleashing rumors that spread far and wide,
Corrupting my witness, then nowhere to hide.

It’s such a small thing with enormous impact,
It releases venom whenever attacked,
When left unchecked it does irreparable harm,
When loaded and firing it’s hard to disarm.

It can be controlled when I soften my heart,
If I yield to my Savior and let Him impart,
The wisdom each moment He wants me to share,
Reflecting His love which never impairs.

With motives then pure and words now controlled,
His light shines through me as His words are now told,
With me slow to speak, His love flows through me,
A reflection of Him now my witness can be.

Ultimately, our words and actions reveal our hearts.

God wants our hearts surrendered to Him so that our words and actions can be aligned with His nature, character, and will.

It all starts with the heart.

I need to slow down my impulsiveness and ensure alignment in the flow:  sense-ALIGN-respond.

Only then can my words and actions reflect the heart of God.

That’s the goal, and by His grace it’s possible.
