Eternal Light
When I see spectacular displays of light, I’m reminded of how often God uses light in the Scripture to reveal His presence, His power, and His promises:
- In Genesis – “and God said, “Let there be light”, and there was light”.
- In the Psalms – “the Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear”.
- In John’s gospel – “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”.
- From Jesus about Himself – “I am the light of this world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness”.
- Jesus’ instruction to us – “You are the light of the world. A city on the top of a hill cannot be hidden”.
- And in Revelation – “the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light”.
All of these verses remind me of the eternal nature of God’s light, and that’s the heart behind this poem:
“Eternal Light”
We walk now in hope for when darkness is gone,
and we’ll live in the light of the eternal Son,
We’ll no longer need either day or night,
for God in His holiness will be our light;
It’s hard to imagine such a celebration,
Each moment we’ll worship the God of creation,
We’ll focus on Jesus and won’t be distracted,
from the love of the Lord which can’t be retracted.
…oh, what joy that will be…
We’ll join with the Saints in angelic hymns,
Freed from all sorrows, forgiven of sins,
with joy everlasting and praise evermore,
without any doubt or fear anymore;
Each soul that is singing knows the sacrifice,
of God’s only Son who for us paid the price,
He took on the judgment that we each deserved,
and then went to heaven and our rooms reserved.
…but we get glimpses of heaven here…
So grateful that joy can be found here on earth,
by calming our hearts and doing God’s work,
by trusting in Him for our path and our plan,
by resting in Him and holding His hand,
by seeking and finding Him in everything,
by thanking Him for His love never ending,
by walking by faith and never by sight,
by following closely the Eternal Light.
…each glimpse breaks through the darkness…
Though darkness will grow till our Savior returns,
we’ll always have light, His scripture affirms,
when we follow Jesus, stay true to His Word,
the Spirit will guide us, our hearts will be stirred;
He wants us to then be His light in this world,
And through us His love to the world is unfurled,
when our work is through, He’ll welcome us home,
in the warmth of His light, all things then made known.
…what a day of rejoicing that will be!
***
We’re promised that even in our darkness, if we seek Him we will find His light…and His light cannot be overcome by darkness.
That hope for today is strengthened by the promise of Eternal Light which we’ll fully experience tomorrow.
What a marvelous gift His light is!
