Humility

We’ve all heard Proverbs 16:18 – “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” – often times shortened to “pride comes before the fall”. In our world with so much arrogance, ego, and pride, we need to be reminded that humility allows the learning to occur and the wisdom to come. That’s what this poem is about:

“Humility”

It’s easy for me to believe in myself,
When I take the credit for things going well,
I’m one step away from the fall that will come,
When I puff out my chest and beat my own drum.

Pride distorts God’s truth that we need to hear,
It clouds up our judgement, so nothing is clear,
Pride hardens the heart, difficult to displace,
It blazes a trail that leads to disgrace.

When humble we learn, then wisdom can follow,
We listen today, trust God with tomorrow,
We recognize moments when pride could take root,
We give God the glory, the pride we refute.

When we humble ourselves, the Lord lifts us up,
We are exalted and He fills our cup,
As we seek His will, to Him humbly pray,
He shares what is right and shows us His way.

We sometimes forget that the Lord lifts us up and exalts us if we humble ourselves, submit to Him, and let Him use us for His purpose and plan.

He waits for us to approach with contrite hearts and the willingness to let Him instruct and lead.

May we all have the humility that opens our hearts to the Lord, invites Him in for needed instruction, and follows His guidance as we then step forth in faith.
