Urgency

I’ve spent a lifetime taking the Lord for granted…happily charging forward doing my own thing and then desperately seeking Him when things went wrong.

I relied on myself until I couldn’t anymore, and my urgency in calling out to Him was tied directly to my level of despair at that time.

But I know that’s not how God wants me to be.

He wants me to seek Him consistently and intentionally…not based on my situation, but out of gratitude for His faithfulness and my desire to walk closely with Him each step of the way.

The Lord invites us to call on Him, to draw near to Him, and to be intentional in our desire to stay close to Him.

He wants us to do that with humble, repentant, and grateful hearts.

Urgently.

While He is near.

Urgency

I went through life quite confident,
That in my need, He’d be present,
I thought His love was “on demand”,
Expected it at my command,
I felt no sense of urgency,
To seek Him out attentively,
I had control of everything,
Was ready for what life would bring.

I could not have been more wrong.

So all was well until that day
When much went wrong to my dismay,
And I reached out to get His help,
But I sensed I was by myself;
That forced me then to look inside,
And sadly see my selfish pride
Had taken what He gave for granted,
For I ignored what He’d implanted.

So I faced what I’d become.

I bowed my head and repented,
For all my sins that prevented
Me from the closeness that He wanted
In all the time that I had squandered;
And as I cried out prayerfully,
I felt Him listening lovingly,
He held me close, He brought me near,
He let me know that He did hear.

So grateful that He did.

He welcomed me back in His arms,
And all my guilt He then disarmed,
He showed me how much He did care,
As He made joy from my despair;
He asked me to now see the gift
His presence is, and then to shift
My focus from me onto Him,
And listen to His voice within.

He helped me change.

I step forth now so differently,
I seek the Lord with urgency,
I invite Him to walk with me,
To be my guide and let Him lead;
I’m thankful for each moment now,
When in His presence I’m allowed,
All that I would just take for granted,
His grace and mercy have supplanted.
